Ganpatipule beach - Watercolor paintings

Ganpatipule beach, located on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, is a clean, tranquil, and pristine beach known for its scenic beauty, coconut palms and the historic 400 year old Swayambhu Ganpati temple. 

We were at this beautiful beach last August and and I captured the monsoon landscape at different times of the day and so began my series of Watercolor paintings on my most favourite subject “Seascapes”. I got everything that I was looking for. 

Water, the elixir of life, one of the most fundamental requirements for life in any form, is somehow my source of inspiration. Moreover, I spent all my life close to sea and I feel, painting a seascape is more about capturing water and sky. It is about expressing emotion, movement, and silence all at once. Through these simple limited palette paintings, I get to explore color, light, texture and atmosphere in unique ways.

In most of my paintings below I have mostly used  Chitrapat handmade paper  . The size of the paper varies in each of them. This paper can be easily purchased online from different stationery branded stores. I normally buy the rough textured pad from Himalaya Fine Art which is situated in Fort area. In fact, the store comes up with sale every three to four months and I love the discount offers that they provide and moreover the products are genuine and great quality. Would definitely recommend everyone to try it out once.

However, I do plan to create a post very soon on my “Limited Palette” exploration which I began a few months ago after getting inspired by world renowned artist Hazel Soan.

Using a limited palette has given a new direction to my watercolor techniques. I now use just about three to five color hues and that keeps my work simple. I get better color harmony and avoid muddy effects. Watercolor medium is challenging by itself and using a lot of color pigments can complicate it further.

Watercolor paintings of Icebergs on Chitrapat handmade paper

A few months ago, I happened to come across beautiful documentaries on nature on NETFLIX. The more I watched, the more I got fascinated and then my art journey took a new turn. I started painting “Icebergs” and “Glaciers”. Ideally, I would love to experience these beautiful marvels of nature myself, however I do believe that I can travel to these places via my paintings. When I create them on paper, I actually feel the atmosphere bit by bit using my brushes, paints and my thoughts. The final outcome transports me to these lovely places and I am practically in a different world.

For reference photographs, I normally browse through free sites like PIXABAY and UNSPLASH.

At times I also ask permission from photographers and travelers, and give due credit to them once the painting is done. More details about the paintings posted below can be seen on my INSTAGRAM handle, where in I am more regular at posting my works. If you have observed already, I am more into using a limited palette in each of my paintings below. When I post on Instagram, I normally mention the colours used which can be anything between three to five colour hues. ( Each colour hue could be made of one or more colour pigments ). Lesser the better. 

The paints, the brushes and the paper matter a lot when creating a Watercolor painting. I am still learning, experimenting and exploring but have realised that Chitrapat handmade paper is wonderful as it is great for wet on wet technique. In paints I majorly use Camel Artists quality Watercolor tubes and for brushes I will be writing another post soon as each of the brush that I use today has a story behind it and over a period of years I have invested in some expensive brushes which I do not regret as they have made a lot of difference in the quality of my works.

Have you ever tried painting small figures on paper ?

Some months ago, I decided to create figurative works on small cutout’s of Chitrapat handmade paper. I basically did it to get a better understanding of human anatomy. Moreover since I am a landscape artist I find it tricky to add tiny figures in a 5” X 7” artwork. So the idea was to develop a technique to create the right strokes to get the figures looking realistic on paper. To a great extent, it helped and I was happy.

The paints I used were

1. Camlin Artist watercolor tubes

2. Winsor and Newton Cotman paints

The brushes I used were

1. Van Gogh foldable brush ( It comes with Van Gogh paint set )

2. Escoda Perla round brush

3. Winsor and Newton rigger brush

Golden Gate Bridge - A watercolor painting on Chitrapat handmade paper

 PIXABAY is a free stock photography and royalty free stock media website. It is used for sharing photos, illustrations and a lot more, under the custom PIXABAY License, which generally allows the free use of material with some restrictions. I personally enjoy browsing through this site for some interesting reference photos of places that I haven’t visited so far but would love to paint them anyway.

I have already painted the “Golden Gate Bridge” ( “A suspension bridge that connects the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. ) on earlier occasions but the photo that I found recently caught my eye mainly because, it had quite a different composition as it was an evening scene and also captured the cars racing across the bridge. This scene looked a bit challenging as I decided to use the watercolor medium and had to capture the racing cars, which were going to be gestural strokes and not too much of details. 

I finally painted it on Chitrapat handmade paper using my usual Winsor and Newton Cotman and Camlin Artists water color tubes. 

After having completed a painting, every artist looks back and reflects on the entire process of creating it. I do the same. I haven’t painted this kind of a scene before and by the time I completed it, I was happy. Trying something new and different is always very exciting. It motivates you further to pursue the journey.

Seascape - A water color Painting on Chitrapat handmade paper

Using Chitrapat handmade paper has always been a delight. I have written a lot already about the advantages of using this paper in my previous posts and I personally use this paper a lot. Apart from this paper I also like using Arches cold pressed paper and Fabriano Acquarello paper. 

For the painting below I have used very few colors, namely raw sienna, burnt sienna, orange and ultramarine blue. Using wet on wet wash technique, I initially painted the sky, the ocean and the sandy beach. Then I let the paper dry. Later I used ultramarine blue and burnt sienna to create the rocky structures in the distance, followed by the ocean and the beach. I also added few sailboats in the distance, using a very dilute wash of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna. The reflections of the rocks were added pretty much in the end. Can you also spot the birds flying in the sky? It was fun painting this seascape which has an overall warm tone and I forgot to mention that I have used Winsor and Newton Cotman paints and Camlin Artist watercolor tubes for this work.

Watercolor thumbnail sketch to simplify the painting process

Water color medium by itself is challenging medium as compared to others. Therefore before attempting the final painting, I love to explore the different possibilities by doing small “Thumbnail sketch” or “Preliminary Study”. 

The subject “Cargo Ship” is a little out of my comfort zone and moreover it also involves the understanding of ship structure in general. Therefore, I felt it appropriate to create the two “Thumbnail sketches” as below to visualise the final painting. It also helps me to simplify a very complicated painting and most importantly it is a great mental warm up exercise.

 Both works are created on Chitrapat handmade paper which is made of 100% cotton fibreand very economical too. CLICK HERE to know more about this paper.

During my initial years of painting I was unaware of the advantages of creating thumbnail sketches/preliminary studies. As I progressed in my journey I got inspired by a lot many experienced artists who advised on following this routine in order to plan and research an artwork beforehand. It made a lot of sense to me and initially it was not easy to adapt to this routine as this involved additional effort of creating a complete painting in a small size. Some of my initial attempts were pretty disappointing but as time progressed, I got more comfortable in creating small thumbnail works which are either 3” X 4” OR 4” X 5.5”.

Sometimes I feel that my thumbnail works which are done so spontaneously, without any fear of getting wrong, have that freshness and energy in them which sometimes goes lacking in the larger version of the same artwork.

Limestone Rocks and cliffs ( Vietnam )

 While at Cam Pha sea port during his last voyage, my husband got to witness the beautiful prehistoric “Limestone Rocks”, it’s reflections and the sudden ripple in the waves caused by a passing vessel. His cargo ship had arrived there at inner anchorage for loading cargo for the next destination. He sent me a few photographs of these stunning rocks and cliffs, which dotted the sea all around and I used them as a reference to create the two water colour paintings as below. 

As mentioned in my earlier posts, I have got pretty much used to working on Chitrapat handmade paper and have taken a strong liking to it. My technique involves working wet on wet and this paper holds a lot of water and stays wet for a longer time. It’s acid free and is made of 100% cotton fibre. It works good for me. I purchase Chitrapat paper from maxa-enterprises ( online store at Pune ), however there a lot many online stores today who sell the same paper so it’s great that one can easily order it online.

For most of my watercolor paintings, I use a mix of Winsor and Newton and Camlin Artist watercolor tubes. They are both good in their own ways. If you are a beginner, I would personally recommend Camlin tubes as it is very economical and has great quality too. Given below are my two palettes which I use for both these brands. I like the Majello palette for its large working space instead of having small wells.

Golden Gate Bridge, California - A water color painting

Today’s water color painting has been inspired by the “Golden Gate Bridge”, a suspension bridge, one of the most internationally recognised symbols of San Francisco, California and the United States of America. This is my second painting of the Bridge and I have used a reference image from “PIXABAY” . I am grateful to all the photographers who have been sharing the photographs with PIXABAY which then makes it available to us for free reference.

I created this artwork on 8th of September and posted it on INSTAGRAM. I am more regular at posting in Instagram and I keep promising myself that I shall blog regularly but somehow find it difficult to manage everything together. 

The overall composition of the landscape appealed to me. The Golden Gate Bridge is the focal point in the painting and it’s reflections on the wet shoreline was fun to work with. During my initial watercolor days, I remember spending lot of time in detailing lot of unnecessary things. These days I am careful to concentrate only on the focal point and I avoid overworking on the other elements.

For quite some time now I have been using Winsor and Newton Cotman and Camlin Artists water color tubes for my water color paintings. Each brand has its own merits and I particularly use the Sky and ocean colors from Winsor and Newton. However for working with the greens and other darks I depend on the Camlin. Over a period of time, as I get more deep into my watercoloring my choices may evolve. I will explore the other colors too.

Gondola’s at the moorings in Venice - A watercolor painting

For quite some time I had been thinking about painting “A close up of Gondola’s in Venice” and then I came across a reference photo in PIXABAY  which seemed a perfect composition. So I went ahead and created my today’s watercolor painting on one of my favourite papers,  Chitrapat handmade paper  .

Chitrapat paper comes in two different textures namely the “ Rough” and the “Matt”. I always work with the rough textured paper and unfortunately I purchased a whole pad of twenty sheets of Matt textured version which did not work for my kind of techniques. If you are new to watercolor painting I would highly recommend to stick to rough textured paper as it is fantastic to work with especially the “wet on wet” technique.

Why I love working with Chitrapat handmade paper

“Sky” is a major part of any landscape and painting a cloudy sky can be a challenge. The subject for my today’s painting is an “Evening Sky” and I have used Chitrapat handmade paper for this water colour painting. 

I love this paper and enjoy working on it mainly for the following reasons:

• It is great for wet on wet technique 
• It is available in 270 gsm as well as 440 gsm and hence does not buckle much. 
• It is very economical as compared to imported papers like Arches and Fabriano 
• It is easily available on online stores 
• It is acid free paper

However for blogging I write a lot more in detail and it takes time so no matter how hard I try to be a little more disciplined, it eventually gets a bit delayed.

For most of my watercolor paintings, I use a mix of Winsor and Newton and Camlin Artist watercolor tubes. They are both good in their own ways.

Painting in watercolor medium is a beautiful experience. All I need is a palette, a few brushes and a paper. It’s very convenient to carry it along when travelling. I plan to pursue my water colour passion for a long time ahead.

Sunlit Branches- A watercolor painting on Chitrapat handmade paper

A morning scene from Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary ( Also known as Keoladeo National park )  The sunlit branches glistening in the morning rays of the sun inspired me to create this artwork. In order to create the texture of the foliage I decided to use the fan brush and the rigger brush and was happy to get the desired effect. I have used a limited palette and mainly the warm colors in this landscape painting. In most of my water color paintings I limit myself to using as few colors as possible. It helps in simplifying the painting process.

The two papers that I love to work with are Arches cold pressed paper. and  Chitrapat handmade paper . Arches however is very expensive and hence I use more of Chitrapat paper these days but very soon plan to shift to Arches paper. For its price, I would definitely Chitrapat paper to all beginners. It can be easily purchased from online stores in India.

One Morning at Bogmolo beach in Goa ( Chitrapat handmade paper )

When I started with watercolors, a few years back, I decided to work with many different papers available in the market. ( Check out on my INSTAGRAM page for my works and reviews of different papers ). Over a period of time I realised that I enjoy working with only a few of them. Chitrapat handmade paper is one of my preferred choices for the following reasons:

1. It is very reasonably priced as compared to imported papers.
2. It has good water retention quality
3. It is an acid free paper so helps preserve the quality of artwork in future
4. Works good for wet on wet technique
5. Easily available online in many art stores across India

Sailed out - A water color painting on Chitrapat handmade paper

 The watercolor painting that I am posting today has been inspired by a photograph taken by my husband while he was at "The Bund", in Shanghai. There were a few more shipping vessels in the vicinity but I decided to keep just one in order to get a better composition.

It’s a morning scene, with a little warmth in the sky and a few clouds scattered across. A small cargo vessel is headed towards its next destination. This painting to me is the story of this shipping vessel and it’s journey ahead.

Today’s post is a water colour painting of a morning scene at Charkhi Dadri, a small town 120 kms away from Delhi. These farms belong to our family friend and I am grateful to him for sending this reference photograph, which inspired me to create the painting as seen below.

This painting is a gratitude to all the farmers in the world who are involved in this noble profession. We get food on our tables, because someone, somewhere is working in the fields to produce it. I have once again used Chitrapat handmade paper for this painting.

Banana - A still life water colour painting

Today’s post is a still life water color painting of "A Banana " that I created some time back on Chitrapat handmade paper. I get plenty of sunlight at my place in the mornings and keeping the object in its direction helps me in getting the desired composition before beginning the artwork.

As I have been writing in my earlier posts too, over a period of time and after repeatedly using this paper I have taken a liking to it. It somehow seems to work for me. I can also say the same for Arches cold pressed paper, however Chitrapat paper is far more cheaper than Arches and is a great paper for both beginners and professional artists. Hence depending on what the budget is, one can go for either of the papers.

I have not been doing serious artworks in charcoal and pastel medium for a long time now. There is no plan as of now. All I know is that presently I am enjoying the water colour medium and will continue to do so for some more time.
