Plein air sketching - Cloudscapes

"Plein air sketching" or in other words "Painting on location" can be a very enriching experience. I tried my hands at painting clouds as seen on a clear day just outside our Coorg Homestay. All three works as given below are Graphite works ( 3B and 4B pencils ), small in size and are done in my Travel sketch book.

What I enjoyed the most was that I could very clearly see the values, the shapes and I agree with all Plein air artists when they say that painting on location is so much better than painting from a photograph. A photograph never captures the details and colours as eyes can see personally. However if plein air is not possible then a combination of both works well with me as of now but I do plan to do more of Plein air sketches and paintings.

Since clouds were shifting every two minutes and were changing their shapes and shadows as well, I had to be quick to get the basic shape and shading in less than five minutes and I took another ten minutes to complete the shading based on my observation.

All the cloudscapes as done above are either in early morning or just before sunset. Some time later I could make use of these study sketches in creating water colour paintings or I could use it in one of my pastel landscapes.

Sketching a portrait using pencil

I posted a pencil portrait some time back which I created on a 6" x 6" Favini paper. Based on
the same series I have done another portrait using HB and 6B pencil by Camel. Sketching a
portrait is a very different experience as compared to doing landscapes and seascapes.

Presently I am using Canson and Fabriano papers to create my charcoal and pencil drawings. My stock of Favini papers which I purchased quite some time back is almost getting over.

Beautiful face of a woman from Kutch ( Gujarat ) - a pencil sketching

Posting below yet another portrait rendered in pencil. The sketching is done on FAVINI paper and I have used two different pencils for the same. Normal 2B and a 6B pencil. I am working on yet another portrait of similar kind. Beautiful faces from Kutch , adorned with jewellery made of silver and other beads.

Favini is an acid free paper with two different usable sides. One has textured surface and the other side is smooth. For any portrait sketching I always use the smooth side of the paper.

If I were to frame this work, I would use an offwhite matt board around it ( neutral colour )
and a thin black fibreboard frame around it. This painting will require glass over it for protection.
Pencil sketches do not smudge as much as soft pastels, hence I have not used any fixative over it.
